I use this occasionally, but the issue is it won't turn off the screen when I close the lid; is there a way I can set it so it turns off the screen?

What about setting one of your Hot Corners to sleep the display?

That way, you can use the Hot Corner to turn the display off, and run InsomniaX to keep your computer on while you close the lid.

just try turning the brightness of your screen before you close it.

On my powerbook I am able to reduce the brightness until the screen is black and therefore off!

I hate HotCorners, but I can use the shortcut to sleep the display; turning off the brightness still keeps the display on.

I was hoping for a solution with manually turning the screen off.
