Often, I'll want to take a few photos with instagram but I won't have time to play around trying different filters there and then.

For instance, say I'm walking down the street, spot an opportunity to take a good photo, do so, but don't want to stand there in the street, or walk along playing with the filters.

How do I save photo (or photos) without filters, and then go back and add filters when it's more convenient?

Just use the "normal" filter and you can always reopen the shot in the app and apply filters.

How do you reopen the photo within the app later and add filters?

OR, just take the picture with your camera, and load them to instagram later. instagram allows you to select pictures from your camera roll.

in the share section of instagram, tap the double square icon in the lower left, and it will take you to your pictures folder.

I thought if you imported a photo from the camera roll, it reduced the quality/resolution?

Well if you take a photo with the instagram camera, it's a high res image. I thought I read somewhere that if you import from the camera roll, it lowers the resolution to something crap like 600x600.

No good for printing.

doesn't it do that with all photos that get filtered? instagram is for sharing pictures throught he app, i dont think it was ever designed as a filter to print app. if you want a "filter" app, there are plenty others in the app store that offer full resolution filter-izing.

not true for me. all my instagram photos (which aren't zoomed) are somewhere between 1400px and 1900px, including pictures taken with instagram and pictures taken with the built in camera app and processed later in instagram.

however if you open a picture from the photosalbum and zoom in in instagram the resolution will be lower, because you're cutting a piece out.

(and of course the resolution depends on your iPhone model and which camera you use)

You're spot on there. I've just checked the resolution of some photos I imported and added filters to in Instragram, and the resolution is as you mentioned.

photos imported from your iOS device

Please note that photos imported from your iOS device (not taken with the Instagram camera) and then uploaded to Instagram will save at a much lower resolution (612x612). Apple has recently updated their API to allow high resolution importing to applications, and while this feature will be available in the future, we have no estimate for its release.

Dude just take a photo with your phone withot instagram... THen later on open instagram, press on the lower left thingy and you choose a photo and then apply it.
and BTW if you want an app that has better filter effects than instagram only, theres Camera+ for $1. I personally use for full editing these couple apps
Camera+ (Edits the photo which are filters like instagram's and better, cropping, scenes, frames etc... Awesome)
Finger Focus (Choose which part of the photo you want blurry and which not and to which degree
Color Splash ( You can choose which part of the app you want colored and which black and white, soooo amazing!!!! )
InstaCollage (to make collages simply, also includes the filters :)
