Hit photography app Instagram has released version 2.0, with live effects, new filters and much higher resolution photos.

Instagram now offers live previews of filters:
See the world through Instagram's stunning effects before you even snap a photo. Simply select a filter, hold the camera up to the scene and see the world through Instagram's visual effects. We've re-written your favorite Instagram filters to be over 200x faster so even after having taken a photo, switching between them takes no time at all.

The app has four new filters, Amaro, Rise, Hudson, and Valencia -- the company worked with popular Instagrammer @colerise to create the effects.

Perhaps most importantly, the app now supports images up to 1936x1936 on the iPhone 4, up substantially from the prior version, which only supported images of 612x612.

The app also has a slightly upgraded icon. Instagram is available free on the App Store. [iTunes]

Really wish people would turn OFF the filters when taking pics of things that need some fidelity to appreciate. Food for example or that pic floating around of a gorilla made of clothes hangers. How can I appreciate the details when you got rid of all the details with some stupid Instagram filters?!??!??! :mad::mad:

I like this app in some circumstances, but people that use it for every picture they post on Twitter/Facebook is SO annoying. Makes a lot of things hard to see. At least resolution is upgraded... I wish it would support landscape though.
 
Yes! Instagram has become my favorite photo app replacing both Camera+ and Hipstamatic. The support for higher resolutions is a much welcome change though.

Resolution is upgraded for the copies stored in your iOS photo roll. Not for stuff posted from Instagram on Instagr.am or Facebook. This is for performance reasons.

Yes, there are times when a filtered photo looks nice. A key sports moment is not one of them. A photo of a painting is not one of them (let the painting stand on its own.) That beautiful sunset that looks absolutely gorgeous that you're raving about in the description? Yeah, don't use "Sepia tone" on it....

The best iOS camera app I've found is Camera+. It has the silly filters if you really want them, but by and large it's just a good photo app.

They removed a few key filters. Gotham and the filter interface sux now.

Hopefully they will fix it and bring those filters back ASAP.
 
I'm mostly a no filter guy myself. Enjoying the update. I find IG to be the most compelling of all social media outlets. Personally, I'm tired of knowing when a 'friend' is brushing their teeth in the morning, but a good picture of it is somehow 1000x as interesting. :cool:

The Gotham filter, while highly contrasty, ended up making most photos too dark. You can use another app like Infinicam and get similar results before you post to Instagram.

Not a big deal.
 
They changed earlybird filter and made it complete rubbish! Worst update ever!
 
There's a "normal" filter ... which I find I use more often than not. I think the biggest issue I have with a lot of the filters now is that there's very little difference between several of them.

I do like the integration of the filters into the camera part (where you take the picture), but I prefer the old filter interface, as it was easier to see the differences between the filters.

It's still the camera app I find myself using the most (I also have Hipstamatic and Camera+ )
 
Instagram is a GREAT app. Very addictive and inspiring.

Unfortunately a number of the filters are virtually indistinguishable now. For pre-canned filters, I highly recommend the $2 Qbro app with 50 exciting hi-res choices. For advanced customizable editing, Filterstorm is a game changer well worth the $4. Bracketmode is the best app for capturing (you will need ProHDR to stitch), and Touch Retouch is indispensable for airbrushing.

I have a guy on my Twitter feed that only seems to post photos using instagram. It drives me nuts as so many photos I wish were effect free.
 
Same with sunsets etc! How can I appreciate the beauty of what you saw that evening when I have to look through a green chemical burn filter with dirty corners?!

Also for added "grump" once everyone uses the same filters on every photo they cease to be unique. Just like kids who shop at Hot Topic.

Instagram Android Version is out

InstaPics is released and developed using Instagrams API. Offers a basic set of features and anyone with a android device who loves Instagram should check out InstaPics too.
