A minor Instagram update released this morning lists only bug fixes in the description, but has quietly added a long overdue feature - a share sheet extension. With the new version of Instagram, it's possible to use the "share" feature in Photos or another app that supports share extensions to upload content directly to Instagram without needing to open the Instagram app.

When viewing images in Photos, selecting an image and then tapping on "share" now brings up Instagram alongside other sharing options like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Selecting Instagram will allow users to write a caption before sending the image to Instagram.

As MacStories points out, Instagram's share extension is limited. Adding a caption to a photo is the only option, with no available photo adjustment tools or options for adding locations and people tags.

Instagram can be added to the share sheet through the Photos app by tapping on share, selecting the "More" button, and choosing to toggle on the Instagram option. Once that's done, Instagram will always be available in the share sheet of any app with share functionality.

Instagram can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Wouldn't it make more sense if the extension simply launched the instagram photo editor with the selected photo? Sharing photos this way completely skips the process that made instagram... well, instagram.

It actually does work like that from some third-party apps that previously supported sharing to Instagram, but it doesn't work that way via Photos.

After a high-school graduation yesterday, I heard some people complaining about exactly the problem this solves. Nice.

Now give us a damn iPad app.

Couldn't agree more, I've just saved their website to my home screen. It does the job but an app with synced notifications would be far preferable. Can't believe it's taken them this long to have a share sheet extension though, they've only been around about two years.

Just watch Facebook turn Instagram into an app people hate. Instagram started off with such pure ideas and it has since changed in some undesirable ways. In 12-18 months I suspect we'll see an app that is totally commercialized an no longer fun.

How do they make money? I missed the announcement that Facebook bought Instagram, so they'll definitely find a way to commercialize. The service has never really enticed me enough to use them.

Damn Instagram, they could do this for ages, and they CHOSE to not do this in iOS, and did it on Android.

Wow. Finally.

That makes sense but as a photographer, I like to post photos the way I shot them, with only minor adjustments. The Photos App offers excellent control over photo adjustments. I edit in Photos and post directly to Instagram from there. Pitty that its missing geotagging.

Has anybody actually gotten this to work?

I've tried multiple apps including Photos, tapping the button to share to Instagram does nothing.

Yes, I tried turning it off and on again too.

You have to add it to the Share Sheet.

1. Go to Photos
2. Share a photo
3. Scroll through the different sharing options to the end
4. Select More...
5. Turn on Instagram and slide it up to where you'll see it.
6. Instagram will now be in your share sheet by default

^^^ This X1000. Been waiting on this forever. Stupid simple functionality that Android has had forever. Now we finally get it, but it's in some pointless bastard form that's mostly useless.

Yeah I know that part... it's just that when I tap the Instagram icon in the share sheet to actually share something, nothing happens.

Update: for some reason it finally started working.
