A small but noticeable update has hit Instagram today, with the company launching the ability to zoom in on photos within the iOS app. With pinch-to-zoom support, users can get better close-up views of Instagram posts within their feed, on other users' profiles, and in the Explore tab.

Today we're bringing ZOOM to Instagram on iOS! Pinch to zoom on photos & videos in feed, on profiles and on Explore pic.twitter.com/j1g4JQozK2 - Instagram (@instagram) August 31, 2016
Users will be able to zoom in on videos in each of these locations as well, but the update is only rolling out to iOS Instagram users right now, with no word yet regarding when it might debut on Android. You can download Instagram from the iOS App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Did they miss Steve Job's demo on the first iPhone?

On a serious note was this lack of feature deliberate. If yes, what has changed now?

You might need to kill the app and open it again. I think it's a bad implementation of pinch to zoom because it will not stay zoomed. It's more like a magnify thing.

Not to exciting.

Edit. And yeah, photos look low quality when magnifying them.

While we're talking about Instagram, why in the hell is there still not an iPad version. Seriously, Instagram is all about beautiful pictures (when it started, now it's selfies with duckfaces, Starbucks, ugg boots and scarfs)

Thanks. It helped to kill the app but a horrible implementation.

Huh, yeah you're right about the zoom action. But I guess it makes sense given it's quick and you can't really upload high res pics anyway.

P.S. It also works on video, which is cool.

I agree. It's like a temporary magnify and pictures look blurry. Bad implementation o_O

Unless they allow you to upload higher resolution photos then the magnify feature will always look poor.

Certainly better than before, but the fact that it doesn't stay zoomed in makes it feel incomplete.

All this time I thought I was doing something wrong. Has to use iOS zoom to zoom in.
