I have an iPhone 13 Pro and the battery is horrendous. I checked the battery in Settings and it showed everything is normal except Instagram has a background activity of 53% despite me having turned its background activity off.

how to stop it completely from having any background activity?

PS: again, despite it having its background activity off in settings, the moment I get a DM I get a notification.

Did you ask the app to not track you across websites? Facebook owned companies are notorious for digging and digging at the expense of the user's battery and data lol

offcourse. I have every privacy setting like those turned off. Wonder how it is still able to run in the background and suck so much battery.

my guess it's a bug within the IG app that's causing it to leech off your phone's RAM and energy.

Try deleting the entire app and then redownloading and signing in? If that doesn't work, most likely you'll have to wait for an update by Instagram. Then again, you could also hard reset your phone and see if that helps.

could be a bug yet it's most likely related to how a process for DM alerts (iOS Notifications) is being handled in app and on-device.

iOS alerts occur regardless of settings - unless you don't have ANY data on WiFI or mobile-network.
Think of this just like how VoIP apps work on a computer or on iOS/iPadOS or macOS or Windows. VoIP apps get a priority connection that remains 'on' so that an inbound call can alert you. Thus the same of iOS alerts like DM's, iMessage tapbacks etc. BUT the app itself is mishandling resources or maybe even garbage collection.

To the OP - have you tried uninstalling IG app, restart your iPhone and then re-download, and sign in?

I have turned off background refresh on Instagram before and it worked. The background activity was reduced to practically zero. So I'd say it's not working properly for you. However, when it's working properly like it did for me, what would happen is that when you open Instagram, it would refresh, and then what you see right after you open the app would disappear and the newest post would appear.

This could be uncomfortable especially when it happens almost every time you open the app, especially when you see a really hot picture and it disappears right before your eyes, never to be found again no matter how much you scroll down. Admittedly, if you leave background refresh on, the app would refresh in the background more times than you need it to. So you have to make a choice.

I just close the app completely from the app switcher and swiping up off the screen. Force Close. No background activity possible.

I also have background off, as well.
I have all the permissions off for the app too. Location Never, Only selected photos, no Microphone, No Camera, All siri selections off (except Show App in Search), Background Activity off,

Cellular data on.
Notifications are on.

I had background activity of a few minutes, once. But never since. I force close the app, EVERY time when I'm done with it. I don't trust Facebook hasn't figured out a way to keep tracking me after I simply go home on ios.

Close the app after use
I always do, doesn't work for me.

So I've uninstalled Instagram today, restarted the phone then installed it again.

I then used Instagram for a while this morning, then took a 4 hour nap and woke up, checked battery life = 67% background usage....

I will try resetting my phone to factory but next week when iOS 15.2 hits

Do you get a lot of notifications? (Instagram allows you to respond in the notification, which I would wager uses background activity or the battery in some way that registers as background activity).

*maybe it changed. I remember having ability to respond to a direct message…

I do actually. Even though its background status is set to off, the moment I get a notification I see it flash on my phone.

I’ve heard that even with App tracking transparency, Facebook found a way to still track you, that might be it.
We are all fingerprinted. Tracking is done explicitly and implicitly.

Instagram is running on React, which is one of the primary frontends I develop in. React can be VERY battery friendly, or VERY battery unfriendly. Assuming Instagram cares more about getting information from you than the other way around, I would imagine it is pushing towards the unfriendly battery usage side.

So… experiment: try turning notifications off completely and see if that removes the background activity.

I am in the same boat, the battery performance is pathetic. I deleted and redownloaded the app. Still no relief. All background activity is Off.

Similar case with WhatsApp as well
