Just got a year 2000 iMac at my thrift store, but I don't have any discs to install the OS from. Any way to do this via USB or target disk? Or would I be able to burn a OS 9/10.2 CD-RW and install it from that?

You could try MacintoshGarden and search for Mac OS9.0.x.
The G3 iMacs I have from thrift stores were received with OS installed. Never tried installing from USB, but even if possible this would be painfully slow with the USB1 interface.
Believe recently there was also a G3 Mac OS X Tiger version on the 'garden'.
Let us know how you get on.

USB should work, not sure an iMac that old has firewire.

Usb can be a little cumbersome, as booting is not officially supported, takes a little digging around in Open Firmware.

Something like:

Code:
boot usb0/disk:,\\:tbxi

I think every iMac before 2012 has firewire.

Looking into the OS 9 on garden, it says it's only for machines before 2000. I looked into everything they had, and it's really scrambled. I see a few that talk about a year 2000 iMac, but not sure which to use.

I'll probably use CDs for my installs.

The original iMac's didn't have firewire, started with the iMac DV, I believe that is the one you have, so Target Disk Mode should work just fine, much faster than a USB1 install.

One semi related question, is there a way to restore the control strip in OS X classic mode? I can't seem to find it anywhere, not even in the classic control panel.

Seems I'm screwed on OS X for now. I only have 64MB RAM, and all OS X version need at least 128. I'll need to get more RAM before I try OS X.

Nice machines the iMacsG3 are. Can you tell more about your's?
1) Which color?
2) CD/DVD: Tray-Loading (early model) or Slot-Loading (later model)? Early models only have CD-Drives, later might come with a DVD-drive. Does it work, the optical drive?
If yes, I'd burn an install-disk with your PowerBookG4 using an os9-installation-image from MacintoshGarden or try to get an original installation/restore disk (or maybe your PowerPookG4 came with an os9-for-classic-mode CD?)
3) FireWire: does it sport a FireWire400-socket? If yes, you boot your PB or mini into TargetDiskMode and use it's optical drive for installation. Or you may use an external FireWire-optical drive. AFAIK you can't install os9 onto the iMac (in TDM) via FireWire using a PPC, that does not support booting into os9 (your PB/mini), since the os9-install-disc will not boot on that PPC.
4) what about the other specs? HDD-size, clock-speed?

64MB RAM is ok for os9. Everything OSX will be frustrating ... (or even hard to install! One of my early TrayLoaders is especially picky about installing Jaguar from an original installation CD and I paused further trials. And it doesn't sport FireWire too, which is another hurdle.)

So with a working CD-drive, a copy of os9-restore and FireWire, everything should be fine...

Is there / has there ever been any control strip in Classic mode? Good question. I guess not ...

It's just the base model for 2000, Indigo with a 350 MHz, 64 MB, and 7GB drive. It's a slot loader. Has two firewire 400 ports. I haven't tested the optical yet, but I'd assume it works fine.

I don't think the PowerBook is gonna come into use during any of this, it can't boot OS 9, none of the aluminum ones can AFAIK. If the drive in the iMac is dead I'll probably just use my ancient Win2000 era USB DVD drive.

If the optical drive of the iMac fails, you should be able start your PowerBook in TargetDiskMode, connect iMac and PowerBook via FireWire, boot the iMac with Alt-key and chose the PB's optical drive and an inserted os9-boot-cd for booting the iMac.
So I would go for an os9-install-image from MacintoshGarden, especially, if the iMacs optical drive is working.
After you've been successful to install os9 ou might use the Powerbook to download and unzip Classilla and Toast 4x /5x and make it available to the iMac via FireWire (and PB in TDM).
If you will have os9 (&Aladdin Stuffit-Expander), Classilla and Toast and an Ethernet-Connection, and you may then install a lot off packed stuff from the Macintosh-Garden without any help of hardware outside the iMacG3.
