Install DVDs for MacBook Pro

I have the original install DVDs for Snow Leopard and iLife that came with my mid 2010 17" MacBook Pro.

Would those discs be able to install OS X on a mid 2009 13" MBP?

No, as they are model specific.
You need to buy the 29 USD Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD via the Apple Online Store and the iLife apps via the Mac App Store (MAS) or eBay and other sources.
