Install Mac OS on Samsung 840 SSD + Seagate GoFlex

Hi, I have recently bought a 2012 27" iMac with 1TB HDD and would like to install and run Mac OS from an external SSD (Samsung 840 500gb, attached via a TB Seagate GoFlex adapter). A couple of questions if you don't mind:
1 - when I plug the SSD into the adapter there is a gap underneath the drive, do I need to do anything to secure it / protect it?
2 - I want to do a new install rather than a clone of my existing HDD, can I do this by simply plugging it in and running the installer - I have downloaded the 4.44gb from the App Store?
3 - When it is installed is it easy to set it as the default boot drive?
4 - Do I need to do something with TRIM and is this straightforward?
5 - Anything else I should be aware of / careful about?

Thanks!
Al
