Reporting a problem installing Xcode from the App Store and a solution that worked:

I successfully downloaded and attempted to install this Ap on my iMac. Both times the install hung at 50% complete and caused the OS to crash leaving pushing the power button the only option.

Not only did the failed install fry the OS (10.6.7)--requiring a reinstall and a disk repair via Disk Utility--it also corrupted a directly connected disk array, as well as two networked hard drives! By corrupted I mean missing files and missing folders as well as allot of useless data. Data recovery (such as it was) via Data Rescue revealed scrambled data mixed in with Apple tutorial and example files, logos, icons, from apps never installed on this volume which was only used for backup.

Happily a Time Machine back up wasn’t affected and I was able to restore at least apps and user settings. This seemed so unbelievable that having disconnected all drives and with the system restored, I actually tried it again with the same results.

Apple tech support traced the problem down to my /Applications/Installers/ folder where an early Xcode installer had migrated from my old G5 as I migrated all Apps having recently purchased a new iMac.

I deleted that installer and another associated with the G5 and the Xcode App installed flawlessly from the App store.

So if you plan to install Xcode from the App Store…
1. Check the /Installers/ folder and delete any early version(s)
2. Verify that you have a recent TimeMachine backup.
3. Log off or eject all networked or directly connected drives—even Flash Drives!
