The installation disc that originally came with my MBP doesn't work. It stops installing about half way through. I think the disc is damaged. Luckily I have a stand alone Snow Leopard OS X disc (that I used to upgrade OS'). Can I use that to install the OS on a fresh HDD? I tried but it doesn't boot or anything.

If you're having problems with both discs, the problem may be your optical drive. Yes, you can use either the install disc that came with your computer or a retail disc of OS X. You can order replacement original install discs by calling Apple.
