So I downloaded Mountain Lion on my Mac Mini and proceeded to try to create an USB boot disk. I followed one of the directions posted here be another member and it kept failing. I searched online and followed several I found with a GoogleFu search. (I even tried both versions of the Easy (Mountain) Lion boot disk creator app.) Nothing. :|
Everytime, it errors right at the end. I read some more and a few stated that it was okay and to disregard the error. So, I restarted and pressed C (MacMini in sig) to boot off the drive. Everytime, it came up with "Installation failed, try reinstalling again" (or something like that).
So for the next 3+ hours, I followed and recreated an USB boot disk and each one failed and failed when trying to install. Finally, I changed the way I was reading on how to do it and instead of selecting the DMG file (while mounted) and putting it in the Source part, I selected the subfolder (or what have you call it) of the DMG file. Then, instead of selecting the actual device, for the Destination, I selected the partition that was created.
This one finally finished successfully after the restore and it pulled up the mounted partition. Good! Wrong. I started the install again and it failed.. again.
I was tired (2AM CST) and pissed. So I was looking at all of the options (remember having to do stuff with Hack--in--tosh) and opened up up Terminal (Not sure and doubt it helped but, I connected to my wireless network.) and started looking around. (I'm a FreeBSD junkie and Linux hobbyist.)
I went into /Volumes and checked everything that was mounted. I saw the install disk and decided to explorer in there. I can't remember the path I took but, I stumbled upon the MacOSX (I think) folder and inside was the "Install Mac OSX <something>" (I was tired and pissed, remember? Good, I couldn't.) I noticed it was an executable file, so I figured what the hell....
"./Install Mac OSX <whatever>" and hit enter. A screen popped up stating it was it was Preparing to install... WTH? Cool... My luck though, something is going to fail. 4 minutes, 3, 2, 1, and less than a minute. It restarts.
Again, my luck, it's going to lock up or fail...it always does. "Installing OS X....." Time remaining: About 20 minutes" Wow! Really? Naaa... it will fail soon.
So I grab my HP Touchpad (With ICS on it) and start playing a racing game. Fast forward, I look over and it's rebooting. Yay.. It restarted since it failed. Piss on it, I'm going to bed. I hang out, plugging in all of my toys and look over and I see the screen asking waiting to get setup.
Holy bat balls!
So I go through the setup and install as a clean system (no migration) and it finishes. I have to say that it's running like a dream on my lil early 2009 Mac Mini. 64G SSD as the main, 750G sata in the drive at (data doubler from OWC), and 8Gs of ram.
So after all of that, it was worth it. I'm not sure the Mac Mini ran this well (and fast) ever, even when brand new.
So, anyone else experience this?
