Today I installed 2x4gb of ram in my Macbook Pro. It's only showing 4gb of ram rather than 8gb and when I go into the System Information to check, it shows the two slots with 2gb each, both with status: OK. Is it just not updated from before?? I don't understand.

Remove one of the sticks, then boot up.
Does it still show just 2GB? Or, does it show full 4GB from just one stick?

Which model of MBPro do you have?
What is the memory did you buy?

It's a Macbook Pro 13-inch Mid-2012. New memory is Crucial 8GB kit.

Try a single stick in either slot.
Reseat the sticks several times, and boot up while holding Option-Command-P-R. The boot chime will sound. Continue to hold the same 4 keys until you hear the boot chime two more times, then release the keys to let it boot normally.
Check your memory again.
You can also boot to your hardware test (boot up while holding the D key.) Run both the standard and extended tests.

Memory prices have dropped recently, so 16GB is a great choice, too!
