I have a 2012 5,1 Hex and the Airplay icon is now available for streaming to my Apple TV. This isn't supposed to happen.

It allows me to select my ATV as a 2nd monitor or to mirror my display.

But here's the rub. The TV screen just goes black and no picture ever shows up.

This isn't support to work at all. Wonder why it is giving me the option.

My other Macpro (2008 3,1) also upgraded to Mavericks did not get the Airplay option as expected.

Airplay works just fine - with compatible Macs.

Plain old Airplay as it was does work fine, but Mavericks introduces a new feature to it which allows you to turn your apple tv connected television into another monitor. That requires an updated apple tv if you have Mavericks.

Ah... he has a 2008 Mac Pro... I doubt that will work if a three year old notebook will not. The mac pro hasn't really changed much since 2009. I wonder if the 2012 version will support it.

This is a new feature of Mavericks... along with proper multi-monitor support finally.

I'm well aware of that... I've been running Mavericks since DP1, and except for one version where it was broken, it works just fine... on compatible Macs. There was no need to update apple tv - it's just receiving a signal like any other signal it receives. It doesn't care what it displays.

Let me restate what I have and what works since a few are misreading.

I have:

2012 Mac Pro 5,1 - Has Airplay option but only shows a black screen on the TV. Likely do to my ATV needing an update.
2008 Mac Pro 3,1 - Doesn't have Airplay option
2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 - Has Airplay and Airplay works.

All of the above run Mavericks GM.

Are you saying that you didn't have the Airplay icon until you upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion?
