An octopus's garden
I installed a new HD in my late 2007 iMac (Alu. 2.4 C2D 4GB RAM etc) and it seems to run ok, but especially after watching Flash-based streams (netflix, youtube etc), it starts to make a lot of noise. I can't quite work out what the problem is so I'm here to see if someone else does.

First of all, I may have made 2 mistakes in one: I installed a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda; I bought a SATA III Seagate Barracuda, model ST31000524AS. I suspect right there is my mistake. Still, let me go on. AFAIK, the SATA III connection shouldn't make any difference since it's backwards compatible and SATA III exceeds transfer rates the drives are actually capable of. However, my knowledge is known to be limited. :)

The other thing I did that maybe wasn't a good idea was installing Lion on the drive while it was in an external enclosure. Long story why. The computer was previously running Snow Leopard. I simply installed the drive already formatted.

Anyway, aside from TechTool Pro 6 reporting the drive as completely failing the Temp Change category, it seems to be in good health. Programs run smoothly etc. (I should mention that the old drive was failing). The problem is that it'll start to make a lot of fan noise when under the mildest bit of strain, but what puzzles me is that it is not always the HD fans, according to istat pro, going the hardest. Sometimes its the GPU others it's the CPU. I must say that I'm having the same issue on my laptop also fitted with a Seagate drive (a Momentus XT :().

I'm kind of suspicious about Seagate products at the moment after too many issues with them. Their customer service is great, I must say, but their products do not seem to be well-made. So help me out here, what can I do to stop this racket short of turning off the computer?

Just wanted to add that contrary to popular belief, taking apart an iMac is a lot of fun.
