How can I get the installer file for macOS ventura? After downloading the update, the file does not appear in the applications folder like with previous versions.

That's odd. It's supposed to:

Are you 100% sure you didn't overlook it? I'm bad about that sometimes (even in stores, I'll gloss right over the product I'm looking for 10 times, lol!). If so, then I guess try downloading it again and/or try it on another Mac if you have another available.

Yes, it's very odd. The file is not in the applications folder. Another strange thing that happened is that after the file had finished downloading (I initiated the download from the Software Update window), I clicked "Upgrade Now". Then instead of seeing the regular window saying "To set up the installation of macOS Ventura, click Continue", the computer just restarted, showing the black screen with the apple logo. Since I didn't want to upgrade right then, I rebooted the computer and luckily was able to start up Monterey again. Then I went to the App store and downloaded the file again. At the end of the downloading, I got a message saying "Installation failed. An error occurred while installing the selected updates". And now the Software Update window just shows the 'Upgrade Now' button again. And I'm afraid to click on it since the last time I did it, The upgrade started immediately without the 'click Continue' choice.

Also, if I remember correctly, in the past, I think I had to first see the "To set up the installation of macOS XXX, click Continue" and then click cancel before the install file appeared in the applications folder. But I could be wrong.

Sounds like a bit of a mess. One thing you might try concerning the missing installation file is to download Find Any File if you don't have that app already and search for the installer file to be sure Apple didn't change the location it downloads to.

According to this article things are different in Ventura.

"During this year’s beta cycle, Apple released a new method of updating the operating system. You may have noticed it if you added your device to the beta of Ventura. On a Monterey device running macOS 12.3 and later, you were offered a 5-6GB install of Ventura directly in Software Update, instead of the full 11-12GB installer application".

In any case you can download the Full Installer from Mr Macintosh or the App Store, or with excellent free MDS app, which gets them from the Apple servers and can also make bootable installers very easily.

I booted up from a different partition and did the update from there. And everything worked normally. After the update was downloaded, I canceled the update and found the "Install macOS Ventura.app" file in the Applications folder where it should be. Have no idea why it didn't work on my normal Monterey partition/installation.

1. softwareupdate --list-full-installers
2. sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.0
