Installing a new hard drive - running old programs from the external?

Hi guys,

If I were to upgrade to a SSD drive and put the old drive in a caddy. Would I be able to plug in the usb drive and use all of my old programs without any problems?

I'll be re-installing snow leopard on the new drive along with PS/AE/Resolume which are the main reasons I'm getting the SSD - but will all my older apps work the same as before even if they've moved location?
