Installing a New HD in an Old External Case?

I have an external HD where the drive failed -- terrible clicking noises then nothing.

I figure even if the drive died I should be able to swap in a new HD and use the case, power supply, etc.

How do I figure out what type of HD I have / need? I get confused with all that ATA, PATA, ...

What are the questions I need to answer before I give this job a try?
