The new drive I'm trying to install is a 250GB EIDE Western Digital drive that I had formatted and partitioned in an external enclosure. Since space is tight and I've got cables all over the place anyway, I decided to install it into my dual 1.25GHz MDD G4 running 10.3.9. While slow, the machine boots up with the current HD in place, but when I install the 250GB WD drive, I get one of two problems at start-up. Either the question mark folder comes up and stays (for much longer than a minute) or I get the circle arrow folder and the right-pointing arrow folder, neither of which do anything when clicked on.
The 250GB WD has the jumper set to the "Slave" mode and the original HD has a mini jumper set to "master." There is a difference between the original HD and the new HD, but I'm not sure if it has any bearing on what I'm doing: the original has only 4 sets of jumper pins and the new HD has 5 sets. I have tried the following jumper setups with no luck: original HD set to the far left, far right, middle and without. I'm starting to get really frustrated, but would still like to pull this off without going to a tech somewhere. Any help is much appreciated.
