installing an external hp 22" display

I am not a computer expert and I am having trouble getting my new display to work with my Macbook. Both are new and when I attach the display cords the extenal display will bring up the screen saver and some data from the display icon but nothing else. The mouse will transfer over to the new display but none of the icons on the bottom of my regular Apple mac screen show up nor will the new display show any of the pages that I bring up on the mac. It only shows the screen saver. My external display is a HP 22" model 2207.Any help would be great. Thanks, Ned
