Installing and Running programs from a Flash Drive/SD card?

I've got kind of a weird question...

I want to have access to programs like Lightroom, Photoshop, and Garageband on my laptop. But since I don't need them all the time, I'd like to figure out a way to keep them from takign up space. Is it possible to instlal these programs on flash drives, or memory cards and then run them from there? That way, when I need them I can pop in the flash drive, do my thing, and then remove the flash drive.

Is that possible?
