installing apache on external drive...

Hay, i have recently been gives a 20gig external harddrive. What i was thinking is install apache on the drive (and possibly ruby on rails).

How would i go about doing this?

Would it be the same as a standard build of apache? Or do i need to do anything else special?

Any advice would be great.
