Hey guys,

I need quite a bit of help here. Can somebody post for me detailed instructions on how to properly install the drivers for the HP Laserjet 1020 on my Macbook, such that it will print out documents without glitches?

Thanks alot.

Cheers,
Eric

1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook.
2 Download;
http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg

2) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
3) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
4) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists.
5) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility
6) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook)
7) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2
8) Shut down the MacBook completely
9) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on.
10) Power on the MacBook
11) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

I got these instructions from here

Only step 11 doesn't work. No driver comes up automatically.

I'm thinking of a second solution, that is, if I can manually find out where the drivers are, I'd be able to install it.

I ran the installation file, let it copy the files to my hard drive, but now I don't know where they are found. Does anybody know where I can find the driver files? And what file extensions do they go by?

As a vague aside, I've been running the HP 1020 for 9 months with my PB, and besides the initial frustration of getting it installed, I've absolutely loved it. Can't imagine I'll be buying a new printer again for a long time. :)

I somehow managed to get it to run, based on someone's instructions hidden obscurely in a Google search. So yeah, besides the initial frustration, it's all good.

Thanks alot!

I followed the directions exactly and it didn't work. The printer utility still doesn't recognize where the drivers are and when I try to point it to the printer drivers it doesn't let me just select the folder that all the driver folders are located (/library/printers). What steps should I do next to try and get it recognized? Are there generic drivers I could use? (cups/gimp or whatever) Just to be clear I have a macbook so ppc drivers won't work.

eric- could you please be more specific about where you found those obscure instructions?

Just to make sure we know what you've already tried --

You're attempting to run the HP 1020 with the HP 1022 driver, correct? And when you open the Printer Setup Utility and attempt to add a printer, the driver doesn't show?

Don't mean to be Help Desky, but have you rebooted since you downloaded the driver? If you're not using the HP 1022 driver, you should give it a shot (it's what finally got mine to run).

Let's hope you're not stuck in a lengthy trial and error situation ...

I get this bizarre 1022 that looks like an electric piano when I try to print. When I look at my printer list, I get a Design Jet 5000 PS?? I try to print with it, but nothing happens. Now what??

narc.ca down

Greetings,

I need the old driver but narc.ca seems to be down. Does anyone know of any other links? I had this printer working fine a year ago on my mac but have since done a clean install/upgrade and now appear to be screwed.

Thanks all for your help!

*blinks*

The HP website has all the drivers.

You can get the 1022 driver (which will work with the 1020, if in a random sort of way) here.

I had this printer working fine with my old Ti_Book, but for the life of me, I can't get it to run on my new Intel based Mac Book Pro.

help

i'm having a similar problem, trying to print stuff to the hp psc 1210, which is currently connected to a windows pc. i'm not intending on physically connecting my macbook with the printer, but every time i try to print something, the computer that the printer is connected to comes up with error. my dad thinks i need to install the software that i'll never use on there for it to work, but i think that the error is connection related. please help me out...

HP 1020 Install : MacRumors are True!!!

Frisco,

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

It was all about the shut down;
Fire printer; Fire Mac; sequence.

I had cleaned Library, and restalled many times before with no success.

Worked first time, finally... first time in years I might add.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

os x 10.6

has anyone successfully added an hp 1020 to a macbook running 10.6

thx
john

Not sure if this may help but Macs also have the former Unix utility, CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) installed and printers can be managed in this way. For access to this, paste or type the numbers 127.0.0.1:631 into your browser.

hp1020 on mac os x 10.6.4

Sorry I know this is old but I have the same task at hand and these instructions are vague. What is printer setup utility? Is it something I can find in the mac?

waiting for device?

I seem to have the driver already installed on my macbook, but it says its waiting for device. It obviously recognizes that its connected, and the power is on. what am I missing?

not working on iMac either

the iMac (7,1) also seems to recognize the printer, but in this case, when I hit [print, the job appears to go through, and then the queue empties itself as if the job is completed. And yet it is not. what am I missing?

help for adding hp 1020 to mac (i finally did it)

okay, all of the advice was GREAT. however, one very key detail was left out and it only took me about 2 hours to figure it out. instead of having anyone else go through the same frustration, i thought i'd share. in fact, i only registered to share.

it is a little humiliating. anyway... make sure you unplug your printer - meaning turn your printer totally off and on, *then* it will show up in the add printer options.

good luck!

OSX 10.7 - Lion compatibility anyone?

I'm trying to connect this HP Laserjet 1020 to Lion - I had it working on Snow Leopard - anyone?

I'm trying to connect this HP Laserjet 1020 to Lion - I had it working on Snow Leopard - anyone?

To get the 1020 to work in Lion you need the 1022 drivers from Snow Leopard (or older). I got it to work by copying the "hplaserjetzjs.bundle" file from a Macbook running Snow Leopard and then depositing it in the appropriate place in Lion. The file is located in Macintosh HD>Library>Printers>hp>laserjet
Place it in the same location on the computer running Lion. It will ask you if you want to replace, cancel or keep both files. Keep both files. Then go about installing the 1020 with the drivers from the 1022. When you add the printer follow these steps.
1. Under System Preferences>Print & Scan click the "+" button to add a printer.
2. Find the printer in the list and select it. It will search for a driver, but will fail to find one.
3. Click the "Print Using:" dropdown and select "Select Printer Software". Scroll down to the HP Laserjet 1022 1.3.0.261. Select it and then click "Add".
4. The computer will install the printer using that software.
5. Enjoy using your HP Laserjet 1020 with Mac OSX 10.7 Lion.
