I just received two of the OWC mercury elite al-pro external hard drives and I want to dedicate one of them to recording in GarageBand. How can I install the app to the disk? Do I just put the iLife dvd in the drive and do a custom install of GarageBand onto the external hdd?

Yes. I believe the external HDD should be an option when installing.

It was an option, but it said I couldn't install it because it can only put onto drives with OSX. I tried putting OSX on the external, but it asked me to restart the computer to begin installation process. I canceled because I wasn't sure what to do.

It is an option but it is not an actual possibility. I've tried twice at least and it never worked.

I don't want to risk ruining or bricking my MBP. So, until I know exactly what I can do, I'll probably keep using GarageBand on the internal disk alone. I wanted to have it in 2 different places but one is fine for now, I suppose.
