I can't get my computer to recognize my external disk drive on boot... i've looked in startup disk, and it won't recognize... i've tried booting with option and c... to no avail... it just won't work...
so i called apple support... apple support told me to make a disk image of my os and load it to my external hard drive... i've made the disk image, but it has an error around 4 gigs every time?
i'm no novice, but nor am i an expert on reloading an operating system...
the problem arose when i took my computer to the shop... my hard drive fried... so the receptionist called and said the hard drive was bad, it needed a cleaning, and they offered an optional data recovery for $175...
I asked the receptionist if that covered all my programs... to which she replied... sure it does... so i figured, yea that saves me a lot of hassle, pretty much worth it...
So I go in to pick up my computer and there's a sign behind the [expletive]'s head that reads "Data recovery not guaranteed for programs"... I yell at the woman for making me piss away $175 and she gets the IT, who tells me at least he saved my music, and I can hack my CS4 for permissions if I want to get it to work, minus the fact inDesign was missing files...
So anyways, long story short, after explaining to the IT I already had all my files backed up and thought I was paying the $175 as a convenience fee for recovering my programs off my damaged hard drive... the end result is:
1) my legit copy of CS4 won't reinstall with the current volume present and missing files... I have several other dead programs that I can't reinstall without uninstalling as well... such as Onyx, Roxio Toast, Ventrilo, Quicken, etc...
2) my internal DVD drive went bad years ago, cause the imac G5's standard drive has no heat shield... I have an external DVD drive that I need to boot off of...
3) if I can't do that, I've already made a disk image of both my computer's standard software disk and the leopard disk I purchased... neither have made the 5-7 gig transfer to my external hard drive to boot from.... but I'm letting it cool down for a couple hours... mac support told me to copy the dmg to that and option boot... will that work assuming the external hard drive survives the transfer?
OR
Should I just yell at the owner till he fixes it on the spot? I'd prefer not to cause that'd use up my free cleaning down the line... since I already yelled at him... but I've never booted a computer from an external hard drive... and Mac support pretty much told me external disk drives can't be made primary...???
