Installing multiple Os'es on a external drive a bad idea?

I just bought a Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB drive and partianyed it into three sections.

A) Time Machine 500 GB

B) Normal Use 333 GB

c) 150 Gb or so for Other Operating Systems.

I will be running the the other Operating Systems in Virtual Box, such as Ubuntu and OpenSuse just to keep up with their development.

So will this kill my external harddrive quickly?

Work ok - just be slow. Quite slow. I have a backup version of SL on an external and I have used it a few times. Virtuals might be a bit quicker but still not full production speeds.
