How do I format the new drive? I'm in the disk utility, but I don't want to mess this up.... Thank you..

From within Disk Utility:

  1. Select your new drive from the left pane that lists your devices.
  2. Click the "Format" tab at the top
  3. Make sure "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is selected in the Format dropdown box.
  4. Name the drive. The standard name is "Macintosh HD," but you can use anything alphanumeric.
  5. Click the "Format" button.

Just make sure you are selecting your new drive, as formatting any drive will erase its contents.

There is no format tab.

First, select the hard drive on the left (top level, not the indented partitions underneath if there are any yet). Then click on partition on the right. You want to make sure it's set to GUID partition map in options.. and 1 partition (unless you want more). And click partition (or apply or whatever). The parition format should already say MacOS Extended Journaled. And you might as well title the partition "Macintosh HD" if you want to stay true to it.
