installing os x from external dvd rom....possible ?

is it possible to install os x from an external dvd rom ? i have a g3 ibook with a cd rom and the dvd rom i bought off of ebay won't get here for a few more days...i wanted to get this thing running ...any help would be appreciated

You can do it with a FireWire drive.
