Installing OS X on an external

I'm trying to install OS X on an external firewire HD, and I've done it before, but it doesn't seem to be working now. Here's what I'm doing:

I've got the firewire drive on and ready to go (it's formatted at as Extended (Journaled))
I've got the Tiger disk in (10.4.6).
When i restart, I'm holding down C.
What happens next? It goes straight to the log in screen (meaning it's booting the installed OS on my MacBook's internal HD)

What am I missing?

nvm had it formatted as a powerpc drive
