Installing OS X using external optical drive?

SuperDrive is busted and not recognizing install discs.

New hard drive + external (USB) CD-ROM. Will this work with Tiger and Leopard?

Depends on whether the external enclosure is recognized by the Mac at boot. We have three different external drives containing Samsung and Sony drives and they all install OS X without a problem.

BTW what is wrong with the superdrive? Do you have that dreaded continuous eject problem or something else?
