So I bought a new internal HDD for my 10 year old macbook and I am trying to install an OSX on it.

I d/l Sierra onto a USB stick but I doubt it is "bootable."

All I did was install the HD onto the macbook, I have no format the drive because I am not sure how to do this since there isn't an osx on it.

1) how do I format this new HD?
2) how do I install the new osx onto this?

How did you put it on the USB stick? You need to use the createinstallmedia command-line tool (or one of the third-party apps that does the same job). You'd then boot from USB and use Disk Utility to format the drive.

I think i did use the command line tool then i transfered the file over...im pretty sure somethign went wrong b/c that didnt work during start up.

You're not meant to drag over any files or anything like that. After the command line tool runs you just eject the USB drive and it should be bootable. However, a 10 year old MacBook does not support Sierra. You'll likely need an older version

maybe thats why then..

how can I install a different osx because when I tried to d/l el capitan or older the stupid app store told me it can't download it because my current OSX is a new version.

What Mac are you trying to do the download from?

I don't take it you can use Internet Recovery on the Mac you've just changed hard drive on? (cmd+alt+r on boot)

An easy fix if the Mac you're trying to download OS X from has an OS supported by the other Mac, is to just clone the drive. Alternatively, if this doesn't work for you, I can dm you a download of an old OS X tomorrow. Right now I need to go to sleep, but let me know if you want this. I've got Yosemite, Mavericks, and El Capitan I think.

why the hell has cook handicapped everything? this is ridiculous.

I am on Sierra and can't download anything older because it is old. WTF is the point of this bs. I am so tired of Apple.

If you want me to send you an old release, DM me which release you want and I'll get it ready for you for tomorrow

This is important. If you're trying to do the download on the same computer that you want to install onto, then Sierra is fine. If it is the same one, go to the Apple menu > About This Mac and quote the model (eg. "MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)").

I am using my only Mac that is working which has Sierra installed already as an OS.

I am trying to dl el capitan using this only functioning computer. I want to dl it so I can put it on my usb drive but it says u can’t dl because i am on a newer os.

Okay so I got el capitan on this and it is installed.

I formatted the new HD to journaled extended or whatever it was I forgot and installed the osx.

now, lets see if there is some magical way of restoring my crashed HD.
