installing quicktime on macbook 2.0

hey guys, sorry if this is goona be an uber "noob" question but i just converted from pc to mac.

i've been trying to watch some of the clips on the apple website about the apple tv and macbook air. The thing is i downloaded quicktime but it only works if i download and save the clips then view it. But if i want to watch it with safari open it shows audio but no video, did i install it wrong or is there a simpler way to do it. lol

Well my first question is why did you reinstall QuickTime? Every Mac comes with QuickTime installed. That is if you mean you "updated" QuickTime.

Have you fully updated? Perhaps it's a rare permissions issue. Try firing up Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) and repairing permissions.

No video sounds like a codec problem... which would be really weird to be happening with stuff on Apple's site, since that all uses built-in QuickTime codecs. If the clips play ok when downloaded and opened in QuickTime player, but don't display video in Safari, though, that's more likely to be the plugin.

Are there ANY videos that play properly in Safari?

Also, if you haven't already, download either Camino or Firefox and see if the videos work in either of those browsers. If so, that would point to a Safari problem, rather than QuickTime; if not, then it must be the QuickTime plugin that's acting weird.

Another thing that might help diagnose: When you say you "downloaded QuickTime," what specifically did you download? The "QuickTime 7.4 for Tiger/Leopard" from Apple's QuickTime site? (If so, it's worth keeping in mind that QuickTime comes built into the OS, so you can just run Software Update and you'll get the latest version automatically--no need to download manually.)

Assuming that's what you did, you might try re-downloading the installer (make sure it's 7.4) for the correct OS version and running it again--occasionally things can be fixed by a reinstall like that. Also run Software Update (Apple menu) to make sure everything else is at the latest version available.

Have you installed any other video players or QuickTime additions--say, VLC (its browser plug in can break QuickTime playback), Perian, DivX, or anything like that?

im just guessing so make sure you follow Makosuke's advice but try going into the quicktime preferences in system preferences and selecting use defaults in MIME settings under advanced.

okay so i installed firefox and it works on firefox so now its a safari issue. i set the MIME settings to default doesnt work on safari. its kinda funny how my work place the quicktime on the apples all work but mine doesnt..

open the Internet Plug-Ins folder in the main Library. are there two plugin files called QuickTime Plugin.plugin & QuickTime Plugin.webplugin? these are what Safari use to play QuickTime media. Firefox uses its own plugins.
