Installing Snow Leopard from Leopard question

I am about to go to the store and buy a copy of Snow Leopard.

I am somewhat new to Mac...when I bought my iMac it had Leopard installed. Now that I am getting ready to install Snow Leopard, will all of my data be saved and be automatically present on SL?? Or will I have to back up with time machine?

And after reading some posts, I could spend the extra few hrs backing up additional data to time machine (don't have certain folders backed up) and then restore in snow leopard...what is the advantage to a regular install, and clean install??
