Installing software to HDD while booted from USB thumbdrive?

The title basically says it all. If I were to install Mac OS X onto a USB drive and then boot my computer from this drive would it be possible for me to install software onto my computer? Thanks in advance!

Yes, many times it is just an App which you then can drag to the Application folder, if it is an Installer it can almost always,if not always, be changed to the other HD/SSD in the Installer.
