Installing to /usr/local/

Hi, im just upgrading ruby on mac os 10.4 and will make the new version in usr/local. I haven't got a whole lot of experience with the unix file system and wondered if there would be any kind of conflict with just leaving the original mac-installed ruby 1.8.2 in the origional /usr/bin/ or if it was recommended to do so. thanks!
