I'm in the mood for some linux tinkering and so I'm wondering if it is possible to install ubuntu on an external hard drive and have it boot up when connected to the latest macbook pro. Connection is via usb.

Also, if anyone has any links/recommendations on how to install ubuntu on the external, that would be greatly appreciated too.

I have not watched it yet but here is a link to a 2 part video on YouTube.

I have not tried it yet as I run it under Vmware along with other Os's as that suits me needs best. If you are doing it to just mess around I would suggest that route. I am not sure if you still can but you used to be able to download an evaluation copy of Vmware so you could try that route before buying it,. Can confirm that since the Vmware store is under maintenance at the moment.

sorry to bump this thread up, but i was wondering if i needed to download bootcamp or something to install it on my external drive, i kinda don't want to do it that way though. i insert the cd i ordered (32 bit edition, red cd, not yellow) and i cannot even boot off it. i'm using an iBook G4.

should i just install it on the drive with a PC then use it or is there a way i can install it on the hard drive through the mac?

sorry to bump this thread up (again) but seeing as i do not have an intel mac... and Leopard is out so the bootcamp options is basically nixed for me, can i install ubuntu on a pc and then use it on my mac?
