Why does my Macbook Pro say that for "best results" I must plug it in when restarting and installing updates? Is it necessary?

It is not necessary if you have enough juice left in the battery, I have done that several times.
But, big butt, if the update is running and the battery gets empty and forces the computer to shutdown while no juice is left, the aborted update process could make the OS kind of kaput (why did they take the "T" away?).
