i recently purchased an iphone from canada. i was wondering if i can install firmware from the us onto the iphone, and if there will be any differences or walls i will run into with using the iphone in the us.

There is no such thing as US or canadian firmware for the iphone. All iPhone models of the same hardware-generation use the exact same firmware.

There's only ONE firmware for the iPhone 3G, and ONE for the original iPhone.

So you already ARE using the 'US' firmware (and the french, german, italian, japanese and russian one too) ;)

sneak edit: All 'local' parameters are set by the firmware (i.e. sim-lock, euro volume restrictions, japanese inability to mute the camera shutter etc etc etc)
