installing WMP

Just download VLC Player, and use that. Problem solved.

You need to download StuffIt Expander, in order to install WMP7.

You won't have any more luck with Windows Media Player since it doesn't play AVI files.

As recommended above: use Flip4Mac.

Windows Media Player is hugely out of date and Flip4Mac is the Microsoft endorsed method now.

Microsoft stopped development of the Windows Media Player for MacOS X years ago. It now recommends Telestream's Flip4Mac WMV QuickTime codec. However, this will likely not allow you to play .avi video. Most .avi video files are DivX-based. I strongly recommend that you download and install the DivX codec. You may also download and install the Perian codec suite to handle virtually every video format extant.

For future reference: If you need access to Stuffit archives, download and install Stuffit Expander. It will decompress virtually every archive that you will encounter on the Mac.
