i have a picture that i want to make the background transparent instead of white... pages 09 and keynote 09 do a great job of removing the white with the alpha feature but is there any way to then save this new picture without the background?

You can take it into Preview.app, use the Instant Alpha tool there, then save it out, and use it anywhere else. Preview has had this since 10.5 came out.

where do i find the instant alpha tool in preview? i can't find it in any menu and there's nothing about it in the application help menu

edit* nevermind i found it : )

In the tool bar click and hold on the select tool. In the popup menu you'll find the instant alpha tool.

If the select tool is not in the tool bar (it's paired with the move tool) then under the View menu select Customize Toolbar and add it to the toolbar.
