Instant hotspot works by bluetooth or wifi?

Testing today between my iPad and iPhone, with my iphone connected to wifi, when i activate instant hotspot on my iPad the iphone start sharing, but i don't see the wifi icon neither on iPad or iPhone, only the sharing two circles on iPad and the 4g+bluebar on iphone.

So im asking myself if instant hotspot works only by bluetooth. If it is the case, it wouldnt be inconvenient having activated all day since bluetooth internet do not drain so much battery.

Can you give me some light?

That's the adhoc wifi connection symbol.

But when you force to share internet by bluetooth, the symbol is the same

If I'm not mistaken, it uses Bluetooth to "wake up" personal hotspot for lack of a better term, then uses Wifi the rest of the time.

Interesting. I've never had reason to force bluetooth so hadn't noticed.
