Whatsapp gets my vote.

Beejive is awesome, but it doesn't let you stay logged in.

I have Whatsapp on my phone, can't fault it, stays connected in the background and notify's you when you get a message etc even if you kill the app and best part is, its available for iOS, BlackBerry, Android and Symbain so can be used on loads of different phones.
