Insubordinate trackpad!

I just replaced my MacBook, which was plagued with issues, with a MacBook Pro. Now when I swipe up or down with three fingers it sometimes activates the four finger gesture (about 1/4 the time), and occasionally it does so on two-finger swipes. I reinstalled Snow Leopard in place so it shouldn't be a driver issue. Is this a known issue with some trackpads or something?
