Insufficient space on Macbook to download photos

I just downloaded the 10.10.3 patch and enabled the photos app.

I have about 5gb of photos in icloud photo library and 11gb of free space on my macbook air. When I try to download the photos, I get a message saying that I don't have enough space, and there is no way around this.

Also, when I try optimising my photos, I see old photos appearing. Photos which should have been deleted long ago.

Help? :eek:
