Integration with Car Stereo

I am wanting to put a new 3rd party stereo in my car. At a minimum, I want to be able to connect a standard iPod. I see that JVC has a connecting cable that plugs into the bottom of an iPod so that it will charge, too. But, I would really like to integrate an iPhone somehow. Does a BT-capable car unit provide any functionality with the iPhone via BT? Can you hear phone calls in the car's speakers? Can you play iPhone music through the car stereo? You get the idea. Any comments, especially based on experience with a specific unit, would be most appreciated.
