hi there, i was hoping to pick up a new desktop sometime soon and was wondering if i should go with an intel imac or a pc with core 2 duo? i'm looking to spend around 2000 with atleast 2 gb of ram. i will mainly be using adobe creative suite with the computer. i have a powerbook g4 and a pc so i'm fine with either platform. i would rather have another apple though, unless getting a core 2 duo would be the much better choice then i am all up for it. please give me some suggestions thanks!

Wait until september, as the iMac may be getting a Core 2 Duo.

You could at that point, get a 20" and upgrade the RAM 3rd party and get it under $2000.

The iMac would be great for Photoshop as well. Just remember, that there is no UB right now. Photoshop still performs well though. Once CS3 comes out it will fly!

With a student discount and after selling the free Ipod you could get the 2.0ghz Mac Pro for under $2000 as well.

thanks for the response. a few questions: should i buy least amount of ram possible from apple then the rest from a retailer? how much ram can the imac hold? and finally, if apple does not announce the upgrade in september, when can i expect the next announcement? thanks!

I think September is imminent for the iMac as well as the other Macs (except Mac Pro).

Buy the least amount possible from Apple. The iMac can hold 2GB. However, the chipset if capable of 4GB. The Core 2 Duo Mac should support more than 2GB for sure. But due to cost of 2GB chips, it isn't really worth it to go 4GB at the moment.

This is true. The iMac is a great solution if you are ok with having the computer and monitor in one.

Paris is September 12th. So if you can hold out til then. But remembet that chances are availablity will be scarce as the new machines will be popular. So plan on waiting a couple weeks before you get it.

If that is a crunch for your needs you may have to do something else.

thanks for the heads up. my work load should be light untill mid/late october so waiting a few weeks wouldn't be too big of a deal.
