Apologies if this was asked, but I don't see it. I want to buy a 13" or ideally, a 16" MBP now while I can use my student discount and get free Air Pods. If I buy in the fall, I won't have the discount. With ARM coming, would the trade value on Intel-based MacBooks in 2-3 years plummet? This is my main concern as I do not want to take a big hit on the next trade in, whether through Apple or resale. Thanks.

I've seen people likening this transition from when Apple went from PowerPC to Intel. The figures being tossed around, from what I've been reading, was a 75% drop of resale value from those PowerPC macs after the Intel switch. That's a scary prospect for anyone looking for a 2020 MBP now. I'm not okay with plummeting resale value in 2 to 3 years because I always sell my devices when I purchase anything new -- and I want the most I can get for it.

On the flip side, some people are saying these are the last Intel Mac machines that can run Windows and that, in turn, would drive the second hand value for these systems.

We just have figure out which of the two scenario is more likely. But at this point we're just speculating; I want much more concrete information before I commit money on the table for a 2020 MBP. The back to school sale also makes this decision hard. At the moment, I think I'm going to go the used MBA route to put as little money on the table while I examine how the ARM Macs do.

My current MBP 13" is a 2018 top-end model and the trade-in value with Apple is $990 Canadian. I was just going to buy a 16", but now think I will wait for the ARM version. I'm considering trading this in and getting a bottom-spec MBA in the interim, but not sure if that makes any sense! I just hope my trade-value or resale value does not drop a lot in the coming months.

It very well might not even be a one or the other scenario, but somewhere in between. Which i think is most likely. Multiple factors will affect the resale value prices.

The fact that Apple was asking a trade in value for my 4500$ for 2100$ On their website, Just 2 weeks after I purchased mine, and with the heating issues etc , I returned it and stuck with my old 2013 mbp for now. Also saw ppl selling the 2015 mbp which was what I would have wanted in the interim, but for $2k. That still holds resale I guess but not sure for how long. Time will tell
