Is an Intel S3500 (480GB) a reasonable choice of SSD? I was thinking of mounting it externally and attaching by USB 3 or Thunderbolt, but might place it an old mac at some point in the future.

It is a good SSD but the price is generally higher than similar or better spec'd alternatives. According to Newegg's pricing, you will pay $1.00 a gigabyte of storage ($479.99) where as Samsung has the 840 Pro 512 GB for $429.99 or even the 840 Evo for $299.99. Both of the Samsung models are faster and are well regarded in this community.
