I have a Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite keyboard(v1011)/mouse(v2.0) and just recently discovered that Microsoft actually released (a really good!) preference pane for the keyboard and mouse. Everything works great, but in the Mouse settings, there's no wheel button click action. Basically, you can't remap the middle mouse button to any other key. The only way it's functional is to set it to "Handled by Mac OS".
I've been working in Maya again recently and a lot of functions rely on the middle mouse button. However, it's hard to click the middle mouse button without scrolling the wheel, which cancels the current operation (even with scroll wheel disabled in Maya). Additionally, you use modifier keys to perform different actions - alt+left click rotates, alt+right click zooms, and alt+middle click pans. I've been able to remap the first two functions to the two thumb keys on the side of the mouse, but ideally I would like to be able to replace the zoom function with pan, then use the mouse wheel for zooming. But without an option for the wheel button, I'm up a creek. I've tried USBOverdrive, but the keyboard/mouse doesn't show up, probably because of conflict with the Microsoft software.
If anybody has any tips on circumventing this downside, either on the OS end or the Maya end, my wrists and middle finger will thank you (but not in the "get off your cellphone!" driving gesture).
