I know there was another thread on fragmentation but that devolved into the typical morass.

I saw this and thought it was very interesting and puts into perspective the direction they are heading.

Viewing the chart at the end - and I don't pretend to know the techie side of this - seems to me not much of what Google values most highly (revenue stream generators) is left solely in the Android OS part.
 
It's a great strategy for Google, and it seems to be working well for them, but it's such a workaround and the real issue still remains for developers. Fragmentation of hardware and software versions is probably the biggest scourge of Android development by third-parties, and though Google found a way to bypass it, app creators aren't so fortunate.
